Patrick Range McDonald, the prize-winning LA Weekly writer who has never shirked from talking tough to and about West Hollywood (see his famous, or infamous, depending on where you stand, “West Follywood” piece from 2010), has just rained on this weekend’s LA Pride parade. “Is L.A. Gay Pride an Outdated, Adolescent Mess?” is the headline on McDonald’s blog, in which he asks “Are we coming off passe and immature by still celebrating our gay heritage as if we’re a bunch of horny, drunk 19-year-olds who came out of the closet a few weekends ago?” His answer: “an unqualified yes.” If there’s anything likely to create a buzz before this Pride weekend, other than the effects of the cocktails at the Santa Monica Boulevard bars, it’s probably this.

What a boring article from a sad sad man. In a nutshell, McDonald whines about gay pride in a fashion that other counter-culture gays have done for over a decade. They claim that gay pride is all about cock rings, gogo boys, bicardi and dance music. Has McDonald or any of these other critics even been to a gay pride in recent year? LA Pride is home to a childrens area, the parade is dominated by political and community floats/walkers, and there is a salsa/country music pavilion!
