Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects is proposing another dramatically sculptured billboard pedestal for West Hollywood.
The firm drew attention in April with a billboard structure it designed that was erected on Sunset Boulevard near La Cienega. That structure features a sweeping arm of blue metal atop which two billboards sit. Lorcan O’Herlihy, the firm’s principal, described as a “fluid gesture, inspired by the stream of traffic coursing below.”
Now the city Planning Commission’s Design Review Subcommittee will review plans for another unusual billboard pedestal on the west side of the Grafton Hotel at 8462 Sunset Blvd. near La Cienega.
While billboard pedestals might not be an attention grabber in some cities, they are a matter of interest to some in West Hollywood, and especially on the Sunset Strip, given its reputation as the location for some of the most memorable billboards of all time.
The structure proposed near the Grafton would not have the curves of the other project. But, as is the case with the Sunset/La Cienega billboard, the one at 8562 Sunset would appear to float in the air, with the pedestal that supports it angled to suspend the signs.
The Design Review Subcommittee will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Plummer Park Community Center at 7377 Santa Monica Blvd. at Martel.
