City Council incumbents John Duran and John Heilman have made clear they are already in the race for re-election on March 7. Challengers can step forward to formally file starting Monday, a process that ends Dec. 9.

Each council member serves a four-year term. Heilman has served on the City Council since West Hollywood’s incorporation in 1984, save for a brief period in 2015. That’s when he lost in his run for re-election in March but then won when he ran again in a special election in June to fill the seat of departing council member Jeffrey Prang. Duran has been on the council since 2001.

2017 electionIn 2013 residents voted to limit council members to three terms of four years each. That limit only applies to those elected after 2013. That means Duran has three more possible terms ahead of him. Given that Heilman was elected to fill the remainder of Prang’s term, if he eligible to serve for only two more terms. Heilman already has filed a statement of intention to run for office, and an independent expenditure committee to support Duran has filed a statement of organization.

West Hollywood residents who are interested in running for the City Council must contact the City Clerk’s office to schedule an appointment to receive nomination papers and review the requirements and deadlines for becoming an official candidate.

The city’s elections page provides detailed election information and links to the California Secretary of State’s Voter Registration page, the Los Angeles County Registrar/Recorder’s website and specific links for polling places and sample ballots.
