Water Main Break Floods Westbourne Avenue in WeHo

A water main break at 855 Westbourne Ave. flooded that street just south of Rugby Drive for several hours today.

Capt. Alex Linton of Fire Station 7 said they got a call about the matter at 1:30 p.m. and were joined by employees from the City of West Hollywood and then put out a call to the L.A. Department of Water and Power (LADWP), which is responsible for the water supply in that area.

The water was turned off later, and a spokesperson for the LADWP said it hopes to  restore water to the 30 residents affected by 6:30 p.m.

Because you cant turn off a high pressure pipe system at will, without consequences. They need to isolate the valves in that part of the network and s l o w l y turn them off in sequence before the water can be finally stopped.

You just snap the valves closed and you will create a cascade of pressure waves in the water: destroy pipes, create multiple additional leaks, and turn one leak into half a dozen or more.

They are literally turning off the water as quickly as it is safe to do so.

How many hours passed before the water was turned off? It always amazes me that, in this desert land of usual-drought, it seems to take hours for the agency responsible (I guess LADWP) to stop the water from flowing into the streets when that water is precious! Is that why this story skips over the fact with “the water was turned off later” or was WeHoVille too lazy to stick around and gather all the facts?
