The City of West Hollywood and its Transgender Advisory Board will Transgender Day of Remembrance on Monday with an event at the Center for Early Education.

The trans pride flag was designed by Monica Helms, an openly transgender American woman, in August 1999 and exhibited at the 2000 Phoenix LGBT Pride event.

The event, which begins at 6 p.m., will include a ceremonial blessing, a performance piece, poetry and a musical selection. It will conclude with the reading of the names of transgender people who have died as a result of hate crimes. A march will immediately follow the program.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed throughout the world on Nov. 20. The day honors and memorializes people who have lost their lives because of anti-transgender hatred and prejudice. It also helps  raise public awareness about ongoing hate crimes against the transgender community. November is Transgender Awareness Month and, in addition to a series of special programming, West Hollywood City Hall is lit in the colors of the transgender flag — light blue, pink, and white.

Monday’s event will include city representatives and speakers from the community. The Center for Early Education is located at 563 N. Alfred St. and there will be limited onsite parking. The West Hollywood Park five-story parking structure, located about a half-mile away at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., will be available for overflow parking to attendees who wish to park and walk.

The city’s Transgender Advisory Board, created in 2009, is comprised of nine members. The board addresses matters relating to advocacy on behalf of transgender rights such as education, community awareness, and empowerment and makes recommendations to the West Hollywood City Council relative to the adoption of programs, policies, or ordinances of benefit to the constituency.
