As of noon today, 81 West Hollywood residents have been confirmed to be infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), an 11% increase from the 73 reported on Friday.
That means one of every 455 residents has been confirmed to be infected. Health experts says the number of actual infections is likely to be higher. Research shows that as many as 25% of those infected do not show symptoms but still may be able to pass the infection along to others.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports that 5,277 infections been confirmed countywide, an increase of 15.6% from the 4,566 on Friday. As of today there have been 117 deaths.
The Melrose neighborhood to the south of West Hollywood had 129 confirmed infections as of noon today, up from 121 confirmed on Friday. The Hollywood neighborhood to the east of West Hollywood had 84 confirmed infections as of noon today, up from 73 on Thursday. There were 60 infections confirmed to date in Beverly Hills, an increase from 53 reported on Friday. Culver City had 23 confirmed infections, up from 20 reported on Thursday.
According to Health Department calculations of the number of infections per 100,000 residents, West Hollywood ranks high with 226.27 cases per 100,000, followed by Hancock Park with 225.27 per 100,000. The department reports 2,548.73 cases per 100,000 people in unincorporated West LA, a vaguely defined area with 38,159 people that doesn’t include Westside neighborhoods such as Brentwood or Bel Air or any Westside cities .
“As of today, 1,168 people who tested positive for COVID-19 (22% of positive cases) have been hospitalized at some point during their illness,” the Health Department reports. “Testing capacity continues to increase in LA County, with almost 29,000 individuals tested, and 14% of people testing positive.
“Emerging evidence suggests that there may be a significant number of people infected with COVID-19 who are asymptomatic and capable of spreading the virus to others. New guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminds us we need to use universal precautions all the time – assuming that each of us can infect others even when we aren’t sick, and that others can infect us.”
That guidance includes a recommendation that anyone going out in public to perform an essential task like buying groceries cover his or her mouth and nose with a piece of cloth or a facemask. The CDC earlier had said masks weren’t needed for those who aren’t infected. It now is recommending covering one’s mouth and noise to reduce the risk of infecting other people if you have the virus but are unaware of it. The virus can easily be transmitted by coughing or sneezing. There is no evidence one can protect oneself from infection by wearing a mask one because the virus can be transmitted through one’s eyes as well as one’s mouth and also by touching one’s face.
Health organizations continue to ask that people not wear medical masks or the more highly protective N95 masks, which they say must be reserved for healthcare workers in intimate contact with people being treated for the COVID-19 infection.

I watch this number with such agony inside. Wondering if going crazy for 3 weeks with masks made any difference. We could have protected our multi family residences w a pro active approach. We been locked down for 3 weeks already so if two week incubates just praying the curve flattens out to none .
There’s good reason why we continue to lead the county in the number of Coronavirus cases. There are certain segments of the population in West Hollywood who are defying the stay at home guidelines. Last night while walking my dog, I observed a group of individuals heading into an apartment building carrying beer. They got buzzed into the building where someone was clearly having a party. Another neighbor hosted a dinner party for friends on Friday. When I called him out for it, he said he didn’t “give a *uck because we’re all going to die of something.” While I… Read more »
Supplying masks to the residents should have and could have been the simplest common sense and cost effective baseline proactive effort on behalf of city government.
They missed the opportunity.
One never gets a second chance to make a first impression.
You, Larry, stepped out and made the effort. Bravo.
I wonder if any of those 81 cases could have been avoided had you closed your shop doors earlier tan you did? We’ll never know.
