A Slow Rise in Confirmed COVID-19 Infections in West Hollywood

As of noon today, there have been 8,873 confirmed COVID-19 virus infections in Los Angeles County, an increase of 456 from those confirmed on Friday.

The L.A. County Department of Public Health said there have been an additional 25 deaths, bringing the total to 265. Twenty-one people who died were over the age of 65 and two people between the ages of 41 to 65 years old. Twenty one of those who died had underlying health conditions.

The number of confirmed infections in West Hollywood today is 102, an increase of one from Friday’s count. That means one of every 361 residents has been confirmed to be infected with COVID-19.

In its announcement of the infections, the Health Department said that “as of today, 2,172 people who tested positive for COVID-19 (24% of positive cases) have been hospitalized at some point during their illness. Testing capacity continues to increase in LA County, with testing results available for over 45,000 individuals and 14% of people testing positive.”

The Health Department now has 21 drive-up testing sites, with one scheduled to open in West Hollywood on Monday.  People who want to get tested can apply testing online and must have symptoms of the infection. Those symptoms include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

There have been 73 confirmed infections in Beverly Hills as of today, up from 71. Culver City saw no increase in its 31 confirmed infections.  Hollywood had four new infections, bringing the total to 114. The Health Department reports 194 infections of residents living in the Melrose neighborhood, up from 192 on Friday.

With 34 confirmed infections, the Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles continues to have the highest number per resident, which the Health Department calculates as 423.68 confirmed infections per 100,000 residents. The second highest number is in the Crestview neighborhood in Los Angeles, which has 40 infections, equal to 351.86 per 100,000  people.   West Hollywood ranks third, with its 102 infections equal to 276.04 infections per 100,000 residents.

The Health Department on Friday announced that it was extending its “stay at home” order through May 15. That order, which had been set to expire on April 19, has required the closure of all non-essential businesses.  Exempt are grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, medical marijuana dealers and a few others. The stay at home order is an effort to keep people who may be infected with the COVID-19 virus from interacting with others and infecting that.  To implement that order grocery stores and other essential businesses are requiring their employees to wear cloth face covering to protect them from inhaling invisible droplets containing the virus, which can be transmitted by sneezing, coughing or talking.

The order also asks that people stay at home unless they are doing essential task such as picking up

The Health Department continues to remind people that the important steps one can take to protect yourself from the virus are to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid being around sick people, practice physical distancing, especially by staying at home and wearing a face covering when out buying groceries or medicine or providing essential services.

The Health Department also reminds people: If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever and symptom free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.

The people of WeHo need to listen – wear face coverings! They are not wearing them. Just look around. Many are not wearing them while walking around, walking their dogs, etc. The suggestion applies to everybody!!

According to an ABC News study of sewage being conducted in Massachusetts, the rates of COVID-19 infection are probably much higher than what is being reported officially. Take a look at it if you’re interested: https://abcnews.go.com/US/sewage-analysis-suggests-england-metro-area-fewer-500/story?id=70068740

“Mask Up” WeHo … I am shocked at the disregard for wearing a mask … why are people strolling, walking dogs, waiting at Urth Cafe, etc. not wearing masks. Ask anyone who got Coronavirus … were you wearing a mask … the answer is No. Get smart WeHo wear a mask. Thanks!!! Our city government should be more focused on mask wearing.
