Cedars-Sinai Medical Center ranks No. 7 on U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll, an annual list of best hospitals in the United States. Cedars is adjacent to West Hollywood and is the hospital of choice for many of its residents.
UCLA Medical Center, whose Culver City branch is the closest of eight to West Hollywood, has tied with New York-Presbyterian Hospital for 4th place on the Honor Roll. Kaiser-Permanente Los Angeles, which last year opened a medical center on Romaine Street just east of West Hollywood, is not on the Honor Roll, but it ranks 15th in the Los Angeles metro area and is ranked 25th among the state’s best hospitals.
The “Best Hospitals Honor Roll” highlights 20 hospitals that excel across most or all types of care evaluated by U.S. News. Hospitals received points if they were nationally ranked in the 16 specialties – the more specialties and the higher their rank, the more points they got – and if they were rated high performing in any of ten procedures and conditions. A list of the best hospitals in Los Angeles as determined by U.S. News can be found online.
Cedars is ranked nationally in 12 adult specialties and listed as “high performing” in dealing with 10 procedures and conditions.
“At Smidt Heart Institute, Cedars-Sinai doctors have performed two kinds of valve procedures – percutaneous mitral valve repairs and aortic valve replacements – more than at any other site in the U.S.,” says U.S. News’ report on the hospital listings. “Via the Kerlan-Jobe Institute, Cedars-Sinai serves as the official team orthopedists for three of Los Angeles’ professional sports teams – the Clippers, Dodgers and Rams. Cedars-Sinai’s Pain Center has a multidisciplinary team made up of anesthesiologists, physical medicine specialists, psychologists (and one clinical psychologist) and dentists.
“Other specialized care in the Department of Neurology includes the Multiple Sclerosis Center, the Headache Center, the Movement Disorders Program – where the Parkinson’s Disease Center is housed – the Epilepsy Program and the ALS Program. Among innovations at Cedars-Sinai are the first use of a certain kind of enzyme to dissolve blood clots in the heart; invention of a catheter that measures blood flow and heart pressures; and establishment of the nation’s first comprehensive women’s heart center.”
The UCLA Medical Center is part of a network of more than 170 primary care practices throughout Southern California and has four main hospitals including Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center; UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica; UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital; and the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA.
Locally, Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center ranks 15th in the Los Angeles metro area and is ranked 25th among the state’s best hospitals.
Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center ranks 29th in the nation for Neurology and Neurosurgery. It is also identified as “high performing” in: Geriatrics, Aortic Valve Surgery, COPD, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure and Knee Replacement.
