We Know WeHo: Having a Cocktail with Nick Meyer of Umbrella Hospitality Co.

Umbrella Hospitality Company: left to right: Austin Melrose (co-owner), Nick Meyer (Director of Operations), Zach Patterson (co-owner), Juan Catalan (Chef, Umbrella TaCo)

Spring is in the air, and with outdoor dining and the hotels open, the We Know WeHo team is ready for rosé all day on the patio and exotic tiki drinks inspired by this week’s guest! This week’s episode is all about cocktails, community and magical COVID pivots as the team talks with Nick Meyer from the Umbrella Hospitality Company.

Nick is the Director of Operations at this “Umbrella” company that has a portfolio of several unique and trendy cocktail establishments in Los Angeles: Melrose Umbrella Co., LONO Hollywood and The Corner Door. He shares with Tracy and Maxine how quickly the team pivoted to offer to-go cocktails to their customers to adapt and how quickly a new endeavor, Umbrella Taco Co., came to life early on in the March 2020 shutdown.

The Melrose Umbrella Company (WeHo adjacent) knows it is all about community, and supporting each other and those in need. Their Cocktails for Cause program, supported by EJ Gallo, features two to-go cocktails offered throughout the month of February which help support community programs at Black Women Lead. There is still time to pick up a “Blacker the Berry” or “Chief Lapu” tiki cocktail kit complete with a shell-shaped bowl.

Tracy can’t help but go down the tiki drink rabbit hole as she reminisces about Trader Vic’s (with a location once housed at the Beverly Hills Hilton), the infamous Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, and the Tonga Room at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel.

Back to the village….

There is a new Detroit style pizzeria, D-Town, on the East side of town beyond caviar-laden Little Russia. Harlowe Bar is offering French-inspired cuisine under the twinkling lights of their charming outdoor patio space. Speaking of the East side of WeHo, that is where Drew Barrymore grew up, and Tracy and Maxine are on a mission to get this West Hollywood native as a guest on the show after she was bestowed the key to the city by Mayor Horvath earlier this week.

Warmer weather also means rooftop activities other than cocktails are popping up like the Full Moon yoga class at the Montrose this Saturday, February 27th. (Insider tip:  stay for a beverage and nosh and enjoy the views after you get your Zen on.)

Food: Amarone Kitchen & Wine, D-Town Pizzeria, Harlowe Bar, Shake Shack, The Corner Door, Umbrella Taco

Drink: LONO Hollywood, Melrose Umbrella Company, V Wine Room

Move: Full Moon Yoga at Montrose West Hollywood

Nick’s Picks: All About the Bread (meatball sub), Ronan, Wasteland
