THE STATE OF EMERGENCY IS NOT OVER
The New York Times has an interesting story today about why CA is still in a state of emergency. We have one of the lowest COVID case rates in the nation. And we are preparing to lift nearly all of the pandemic rules starting Tuesday, June 15, 2021.
So, why then, are we still in a state of emergency? Why will it continue after June 15th?
Formal states of emergency routinely extend long past the immediate crisis, because they allow ongoing aid programs and recovery efforts to continue without interruption. For example, an earthquake emergency doesnt end after the shaking stops. It continues through the clean up and rebooting. The official proclamation of an emergency gives the Governor the authority to use state assets and suspend regulations. It also allows the state to more readily tap into federal aid. It also provdes the State with the ability to respond quickly if there are future outbreaks of contagion without having to start at square one again.
FIVE MORE COUNTIES FINALLY JOIN YELLOW TIER AS WE PREPARE TO ABANDON TIER SYSTEM
San Diego, Alameda, Napa, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara all entered the least restrictive yellow tier this week. This means as of today, one half of California’s residents now live in the least restrictive yellow tiered counties. Finally, San Diego has joined Los Angeles and the OC as the 3 most populous counties all in the yellow tier.
But come Tuesday, June 15, 2021, we will awake to a new world where many restrictions which have become part of daily pandemic life will disappear. Capacity restrictions and physical distancing requirements will end. People who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to go without masks in most situations.
But a caveat for all: just because we are lifting all these restrictions doesn’t mean they are gone forever with certainty. If our future ends up going the way of more infections and outbreaks (like in Asia and the UK), some restrictions may get re imposed. I guess for now – we are going to be going one day at a time while co existing with COVID 19 in the YEAR 21.
77 degrees and sunny in LA today. Enjoy Hump Day !
