WE KNOW WEHO: Cake & Art

We Know WeHo is “back to reality” with this episode featuring one of the longest standing businesses that does one thing, and they do it extremely well — cake.  Their cake is truly delicious and calories worthy, but it is the ART that really “takes the cake” for this unique business.

Tracy and Mikey talk to Tom Rosa who has been with Cake & Art for the majority of the 46 years they have been in business at the same location at 8709 Santa Monica Blvd.  Tom and his team will make anyone a cake for any occasion, in ANY shape or ANY style that your heart desires.

Tom is not only a baker but a true historian based on the Hollywood legends that used to walk through the doors of Cake and Art before the days of the internet or cell phones.  He vividly recounts the days when Laurence Olivier, Lauren Bacall, Cary Grant, Julie Andrews, Orson Welles and George Burns used to walk through the doors to order a cake and chat about life.  All the US Presidents in office since 1976 (with exception of George Bush) have had a cake made for them, as well as Princess Diana and just about every movie and rock star you can name.

A conversation with Tom is truly a nostalgic walk down memory lane of the good old days of West Hollywood.  He can remember long before the City was incorporated when the train still ran through West Hollywood and businesses like Flippers lined Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevard.  You will want to order a cake after listening to this episode and this “spoiler alert”:  Oprah had a part in putting the ingredients together for their top selling red velvet cake flavor.

Tracy and Mikey discuss their ideal Valentine’s Day in West Hollywood that is a good itinerary for any special day – in our opinion!  Tracy’s is jam packed with wellness to artisan coffee, dining, shopping and of course an overnight  staycation.  Mikey’s is a bit more leisurely, but definitely with some key neighborhood highlights.

Maxine pops in for a Beauty Spotlight with David Stanko, a master colorist at B2V Salon, to talk about the best products to use on hair to maintain body, moisture and winter highlights.

Keep an eye out as We Know WeHo is doing events at V Wine Room to complement their We Know Vino monthly wine podcast.  Word on the street is that the next event involves chocolate fondue?!

I’ve always wanted to give them a try! I need to stop in and see what they’re all about. Cakes always look amazing in the window.

Sadly, I can no longer remember the gentleman who used to be there, whom I thought was the owner at the time. We always asked him for a donation to AIDS events and he always, ALWAYS said yes….even when several businesses on the boulevard always said no, (but they were most happy to profit from the gay community of course). These businesses “may” have allowed us to hang a poster in their window, whilst others even refused to do that much. All of this is to say, I’ll always remember this very generous gentleman stepping up when called upon. The… Read more »
