West Hollywood butt of Bill Maher joke

During Bill Maher’s broadcast on Friday Night June 24th, Maher spoofed some of the dumbest proposals being made by Democrats and ripped into West Hollywood.

A Universal Basic Income probably sounds pretty good to a lot of people struggling without a college degree, and a number of cities have been running pilot programs on a guaranteed income, but the West Hollywood Program had to be suspended because it was unconstitutional. They set up a program where 25 residents were to get a $1000 bucks but only if you identify LBGT, the rest of that.

Why?

Because they need money more than the rest of the people?

Because nobody in West Hollywood will hire a gay person?

Maher used a photo of a WEHOville article on his show to make his point.

This reminded me of how many times Johnny Carson mentioned West Hollywood on his show over the years. Someone should put all of those video clips together…would be good to see.

Are you kidding?! There’s enough funny material here that could keep Bill Maher in laughs for years! Lol

He pointed out the absurdity. And the totally unconstitutional, discriminatory program as it was initially conceived.

As it will forever be. The government cannot guarantee income for anyone. That’s called communism.

Apparently this program was the brainchild of Mayor Meister and Council Member Horvath.

Shocking!

Technically, because city council positions are officially nonpartisan, it was incorrect of Maher to call it a Democratic proposal.

They are not nonpartisan. All of the Councilmembers are Democrats. Many of the policies they implemented are all progressive.

Bill is great but grandstanding here I think. The program is for people like me, emphasizing gay over fifty and esp. HIV+. I’m a multi-emmy winner, small businessman and do-gooder who could not afford to live here w/out rent control. Would you prefer people live in Las Vegas and commute here to work at McDonalds because life among the super-rich is unaffordable? Let the super-rich have their way here. As long as, when they go to McDonalds, the hamburger costs $150,000 and the drive there is full of potholes.

This sort of program is really needed as a growing number of long term residents, many who are LGBTQ Etc are going to be facing historically high rent increases which is particularly tough on those whose income is limited to Social Security. We need to keep these people in their homes.
But the program should not be determined by orientation.

That was the unconstitutional part. Nevertheless universal basic income (UBS) is already being done in Alaska where the government pays citizens every year.

The Alaska Permanent Fund is made possible by a $68 billion trust funded by the state’s oil production. It is not government largesse on the backs of other taxpayers. It has also become a political game that has cost Alaskans dearly in other important social funding, including healthcare and the state’s public university system.

Even with all your accolades and rent control you believe you would be justified to receive additional benefits from the city? You sure sound angry with your lot in life.

You are one angry guy. There are choices to make in life and evidently failed to capitalize on your “talent”. The Complaint Department is closed.

There are plenty of people in this city who are not LGBTQ and are not HIV+. And some of them could benefit from this, such as the seniors who live on the east side. Many of them are struggling as well.

The program was for any resident over 50 but skewed towards gays which is the unconstitutional part.

Weho deserves that rip. Whoever came up with the free income criteria was not qualified for the task, but the stupidest city council in the world approved it. Idiots.

You also can’t get the money if your dwelling was built on stolen land from the indigenous Weho Indians. So I guess no one gets it.
