BREAKING: WeHo bars won’t get to stay open until 4 a.m.

The bill that would have allowed West Hollywood bars to close as late as 4 a.m. drowned in the California Assembly on Wednesday, nullifying City Council’s recent resolution in support of it.

While Councilmembers John Erickson, John D’Amico and Lindsey Horvath thought it was a good idea, residents were incensed at the idea of extending the late-night drinking hours during a period of rising crime, right after Council had voted to reduce the number of Sheriff’s deputies in its future budget and the department’s Entertainment Policing Team remained understaffed. Mayor Lauren Meister and Mayor Pro Tem Sepi Shyne agreed and voted against the measure.

Candidates for City Council at yesterday’s WeHo for the People Forum were asked their opinion on the bill, and its biggest enthusiasts were Jordan Cockeram and Chelsea Byers.

“I think it allows for us to think of more opportunities to support and maintain our local businesses,” Byers said.

The death of SB930 is a small victory for those who believe Sacramento has usurped too much control from local governments.

“I didn’t support it the first time this came around this council, and I don’t support it now,” Meister said when the item came up in July. “And I’m really tired of (West Hollywood) being a Petri dish for Scott Weiner and the State, and every little whim that they come up with.”

BEST NEWS this MONTH!! Visitors to the area to enjoy the nightlife don’t know how to enjoy without being inconsiderate, loud and filthy degenerates! Our sidewalks in the neighborhood and on the boulevard are already filthy and disgusting as it is without added more puke and broken bottles and glasses to it. I’ve lived one block behind bar row for the past 30 years and the behavior of visitors has never been so obnoxious, crude and inconsiderate to those who live here that I can ever recall. Congregating on the street after 2am-5am blaring their car speakers with filthy lyric’s,… Read more »

There has been a tourist creep in the last 15 years. Prior to that there was a balance. Not cool for you to be chastising folks to move out.

How much City Time Money Resources was devoted to this issue that was not going to be feasible, be there talk of overriding ATF & CA laws about bars closing, not at 2am, BUT BY TWO AM, ALL PATRONS EXITED THE BAR BEFORE 2AM SHARP. CURRENTLY THE standard for such a small city like WeHo is to “Contract Out to LA City/County Social Service Programmes l. The City has 8ntentionall NOT FUNDED SOCIAL SERVICES FOR ALL RESIDENTS WHO ARE OR MAY BECOME IN NEED OF A WIDE RANGE 9F SOCIAL SERVICES . THE WEALTHY SABAN FAMILY WHO DOES HOME DELIVERY… Read more »

This will be very upsetting for Erickson and Horvath since day voted for it. They wanted the bars to stay open till 4:00 a.m. so they could get their free drinks! Because they are political hacks in this dying city. Take a look at the safety commission meeting last night. Talk about a turn off to anyone coming to West Hollywood for fun. Lock up your cell phone.

Weho has become a convenient target in a compact area where the thieves are hip to all the deficiencies. Would it be surprising to find they have inside informants? Perfect opportunity for the “ambassadors” to share the spoils.

Giving “free drinks” to anyone is a violation of state law, and can give the owner significant fines from the ABC. Ask the bonehead at Mickeys. Any professional bar owner would know this.

Because most uninformed people don’t know this wouldn’t have gone into effect until 1 January 2025, they can wrap increased crime around it as a cudgel.
