The city is looking to widen the scope of businesses that will be required to have gender-neutral restrooms.
A zone text amendment set to be reviewed Thursday by the Planning Commission expands the requirement to all commercial bathroom remodel projects and commercial building renovations requiring a building permit.
The proposed change, requested by City Council last month, would set these criteria for gender neutral restrooms:
- All new and renovated commercial buildings that constitute a major remodel, as that term is defined under Article 19.90 of the West Hollywood Municipal Code,
- Commercial renovations requiring a building permit that includes the removal of interior partitions or a complete floor plan alteration
- Commercial renovations that include relocation, expansion, or accessibility upgrades of existing restrooms.
Gender-neutral restrooms have been a hot-button topic for West Hollywood residents, and wariness of the design, implementation and safety repercussions have permeated discussions for more than a year now.

The Planing Commissioners are like deer in headlights. They will not be able to make a decision or recommendation.
George Santos would be a perfect fit on the WH City Council.
We already have three candidates that would qualify as kindred spirits.
CC and city leaders appear to be legends in their own minds and believe West Hollywood to be the center of the universe. They are clearly not but are an ever enhanced point of divisiveness. Without any scope or real world experience, they perpetually propose outlandish ideas which strangle business and significantly annoy the residents.
This City is becoming crazier by the minute!
Sickening. Hurts women and girls–and now businesses–to promote a deviant philosophy.
Which city council member can this be traced back to? Who was the first to bring up this policy suggestion? It had to have had a beginning.
It may have been city administrators.
And who might that be? Let’s name names!
