Phil Howard and Dean McKillen a year and a half ago turned Laurel Hardware, a hardware store that opened in 1946, into what is undoubtedly the most glamorous restaurant in WeHo (without even changing its name!). We’re not talking about the food, although it is good. We’re talking about the decor, especially the dramatic glass wall at the rear with the garden view. But what Howard and McKillen also have managed to do is make WeHo Central, a formerly dull few blocks on Santa Monica Boulevard where Laurel Hardware is located, a hot spot, as evidenced by the lines of beautiful girls and boys standing in line on a weekend night to get in.

Be careful what you wish for, because this title may be something to be reviled and not revered. Like many, I first read this article without paying attention to the “caveat” for better or worse and I allowed my emotions to prevail over the pragmatism to which I aspire and for or this and my subsequent “knee jerk reaction”, I owe Hank Scott an apology. The idea of Person of the Year caters to our vanity and Wehoville’s application of Time Magazine’s original 1927 concept is provocative.
